GUWAHATI: The UGC (University Grants Commission) has prepared framed guidelines entitled ‘Credit Based Course on Pedagogical Aspects for Teaching Divyangjan and Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) that will help all the students, especially Divyangjan of higher educational institutions (HEIs) to fulfil their aspirations. The move is in sync with NEP-2020.

The UGC requested the universities and HEIs to adopt these guidelines for the benefit of students with specific learning disabilities to make them responsible citizens of the country who can equally participate in nation-building. According to official sources, the HEIs in Assam will also adopt these guidelines.

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) emphasizes equity and inclusion in higher education. It also aims at building the overall development of students by strengthening infrastructure, including open and distance learning and online teaching, and increasing the use of technology in education, particularly in higher education. NEP 2020 puts in place the provisions of the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC), which allows students of undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) degree courses with multiple entries and exits in a stipulated period.

The policy highlights equity and inclusion as the cornerstones of all educational decisions to ensure all students can thrive in the education system. It signifies the inevitability of redefining the curriculum to keep pace with the liberalization and globalization of education. It allows the students, irrespective of any diversity, including students with disabilities, an accessible mode of mobility to various educational institutions with the facility of credit transfer evaluation in the credit system. The credit system needs to describe an educational programme by attaching credits to its components based on different parameters such as course load, learning outcomes, and contact hours for teaching and learning. With flexibility in the selection of subjects and courses, an inclusive pedagogy characterized by the use of multiple modes of delivery, addressing the various learning styles and learning needs of Divyangjans and students with specific learning disabilities (STDs), needs to be promoted at all levels of education. Teachers’ capabilities in science, mathematics, language, and social studies will be developed, including orientation to new pedagogical practices. Libraries, laboratories, equipment, books, journals, etc., and other teaching and learning materials will help strengthen and enhance their knowledge in their respective domain areas.
