GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika and Commerce and Industries Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary jointly visited the disputed areas along the Assam-Meghalaya boundary in Cachar and Kamrup (M) sectors today.

While Tynsong and Hazarika visited the disputed areas – Barpathar, Pilingkata, No 2 Khanapara, Patorkuchi, etc., in the Kamrup (M) District, Patowary and top officials of Meghalaya visited the disputed border areas adjacent to the Cachar district.

After the joint visit to the disputed areas, Tyngsong said, "To resolve any border issues or differences of opinions, the opinion of the grassroots level is a must. We have come to know many things hitherto unknown to us. The fringe dwellers said many problems they had to face."

Pijush Hazarika said, "We have inspected the disputed border areas and took stock of administrative convenience, development activities etc. The border dwellers submitted memorandums to us regarding their problems. Through discussion, we will reach a consensus that will help both governments to find lasting solutions to the problems. We will submit what we have found during the joint border visits to our respective chief ministers. Things will get shape at the chief minister level".

The recent discussion between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K Sangma spotted 12 disputed areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border. While six of the disputes are minor ones, six disputes are complicated ones. The two chief ministers opted to sort out the minor disputes through joint visits, talks and opinions of the border dwellers.

The areas of minor border disputes between the two states in Cachar, Kamrup and Kamrup (M) districts are Tarabari, Gijang, Phalia, Baklapara, Pilingkata and Khanapara.
