GUWAHATI: Morigaon in Assam is fast turning into a second Jamtara, with no less than 107 cybercriminals apprehended from this district in the period from December 2022 to the present day.

Jamtara in Jharkhand is famous as the phishing capital of India due to the large number of such cases associated with the place.

While 107 cybercriminals were arrested by Assam Police, at least six cybercriminals were apprehended by police forces from outside the state. The total money involved in fraudulent activities run into crores. During the arrests, 8,000 SIM cards and other items used to commit the crimes were also seized by the police.

Most of the cybercrimes in Morigaon are related to loans taken fraudulently from NBFCs and government schemes, including PM Fasal Bima Yojana and others.

According to police sources, it is a tedious process to get a loan from banks but in case of NBFCs, the process is easier. The crooks use fake identity documents like PAN and Aadhar cards to get the loans. Moreover, apps like L&T finance and Dhani are also used to take out loans, where no spot verification is done.

It was during investigation in the case that the frauds came to light. Moirabari, Lahorighat and other towns in Morigaon district are hotspots of cybercrime.

Police sources also revealed that, despite the arrests of more than 100 such cybercriminals, nearly 10 to 15% of them are still on the run. The police are firm in their belief that they would not allow such criminals to turn Morigaon into another Jamtara.
