GUWAHATI: Post-constituency delimitation exercise, the Assam Government is going to bring major amendments to the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994. The redrawn LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies) have necessitated the re-demarcation of the local panchayats. The State Government already constituted a Cabinet sub-committee headed by Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass to recommend the amendments to the Panchayat Act.

The Cabinet sub-committee examined the population pattern panchayat-wise and found a grossly uneven population in the gaon panchayat constituencies. The sub-committee is now contemplating keeping the population cap between 5,000 and 8,000. The sub-committee is also taking into account the possibilities of abolishing party symbols in the panchayat election so as to make honest people fight the panchayat poll.

Since coming to the helm of affairs, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been advocating for the abolition of party symbols in panchayat elections in the state.

The autumn session of the state assembly will start on September 11. The state government is trying to introduce a bill regarding the amendment to the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994.
