GUWAHATI: The Assam Police refuted news doing the rounds in the state that 35 members of an Adivasi militant group named APLA (Adivasi People's Liberation Army) were to surrender somewhere in Golaghat or Jorhat today. The news also mentioned that the militants were camping somewhere in Merapani, along the Assam-Nagaland border.

When asked, ADGP (SB) Hiren Chandra Nath confirmed the grapevine doing rounds in the state but said that the news was not true. He said, "We heard the news that a group of Adivasi militants was ready to surrender. We got into the matter and found that the report was not true. We have lists of militants active in the state. Our list has no name for a militant group with the name APLA. Adivasi militants joined the mainstream and laid down their arms on July 6, 2023."

As many as eight groups of Adivasi militants laid down 304 arms and 1,460 rounds of ammunition before Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 6.

The outfits that joined the mainstream of society are the Adivasi Cobra Military of Assam and one of its factions; the All Adivasi National Liberation Army and one of its factions; the Birsa Commando Force and one of its factions; the Adivasi People's Army; and the Santhal Tiger Force.
