SILCHAR: Based on a confidential tip-off, the Assam Police confiscated a huge quantity of narcotic substances worth Rs. 45 crore in a late-night raid at the Ramnagar Bypass in Silchar on Monday. DIG (Special Task Force) Partha Sarathi Mahanta led the team. The police, however, had to open fire, injuring one of the three arrested people who allegedly tried to flee.
Confirming the successful raid, Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said that a vehicle bearing registration number AS11T8283 was stopped and checked. During the thorough checking of the car, 90 plastic sachets containing a white powdery substance suspected to be heroin, weighing about 2.5 kg, were recovered. The sachets were kept concealed beneath the bonnet of the car, and 1 lakh YABA tablets were kept in the boot space. The occupants of the car—Manwar Hussain Barbhuiya, Sadar Uddin, and Ansar Alam—all of Behara, Kalain—were apprehended. They were allegedly smuggling the NDPS meant for delivery to a person at Sonai. Thereafter, the contraband was seized as per procedure on the spot. During the spot interrogation, Manwar Hussain Barbhuiya agreed to lead the police team to the destined location where the contraband was supposed to be delivered. Accordingly, on the way, he requested to attend to his call of nature. Thereafter, while peeing at the lonely place, he tried to flee, taking advantage of the darkness, following which two rounds were fired in order to stop him, causing injury to the left leg. He was then immediately shifted to the SMCH (Silchar Medical College and Hospital). He is out of danger.
