GUWAHATI: More skeletons are tumbling out during the ongoing investigations into the recent leak of question paper that led to the cancellation of the Police sub-inspector (SI) examination across the State on September 20.
Sleuths of the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) and the Crime Branch – both of the Assam Police are stumbling upon evidences that former DIG (Deputy Inspector General) of Assam Police – PK Dutta — named as the prime accused in the case, was running several coaching centres in different places in the State to prepare students as how to appear in the exams conducted for various posts in the State Government departments.
The police got the clue about the coaching centres when it raided the house of one Kuldip Rajbongshi in Nalbari on Friday. Kuldip was arrested from Nalbari in connection with the question paper leak scam. A police team led by DSP Jupi Bordoloi raided Kuldip's house and recovered documents relating to some coaching centres, admit cards of Transport department's exams, pass books, bank drafts, 24 SIM cards and other documents.
While PK Dutta is still absconding, the police on Friday conducted raids at Bhargav Residency (under construction) and around 110 bighas of land owned by Dutta in Dibrugarh district. The police also conducted raid at Bhargav Grand at Betkuchi (owned by former DIG) for the second time on Friday.
Dutta's role in the scam came to light after Hirakjyoti Barua — a candidate of the examination – spilled the beans. This candidate (hailing from Karbi Anglong) was arrested by Nagaon Police; and later handed over to the CID on Wednesday. During interrogation, Hirakjyoti Barua told the CID that he had handed over Rs 6 lakh — through a middleman – allegedly to be given to Dutta.
On other hand the police on Friday also conducted raids at the IT department of Apollo Hospitals in the city after one of its employee Pranjal Sarma was arrested in connection with the question paper leak. The police recovered list of 35 candidates and some question papers from the IT department of Apollo Hospital. In the meantime the Apollo Hospital authority has clarified that the hospital is no way associated with the development and assured to extend full cooperation to the police in its investigation to find out the real culprits.
Sources said a candidate for the SI Exam Kushal Das was asked by those involved in the scam to bring 10 other candidates to Hotel Bhargav Grand who could pay bribes for their jobs. Das was promised the job in exchange of bringing 10 candidates. An employee of Bhargav Grand in the city Rahul Deka was arrested on Thursday night.
The CID and Crime Branch also conducted raids at the Jatia residence of one Dibon Deka, a BJP leader allegedly involved in the question paper leak exam.
