STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI:
Assam Election 2021 Announced: The CEC (Chief Election Commissioner) of India, Sunil Arora, accompanied by two ECs (Election Commissioners), on Friday announced that election to the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) will be held in three phases across the 126 LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies).
In the first phase on March 27, polls will be conducted in 47 LACs; in the second phase on April 1 in 39 LACs; and in the third and last phase on April 6 in 40 LACs.
The counting of votes will be on May 2, 2021.
The CEC further said, "This schedule has been chalked out by taking into consideration the Bihu, Board examinations, movement of security personnel and COVID-19 protocols.
"The code of conduct for the election will be effective from the date of announcement of the poll schedule, i.e. from Friday."
The last date for submission of nomination papers for phase-1 is March 9 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination is March 12. For the second phase of the poll, the last dates of filing nomination and withdrawal of nomination are March 12 and March 17 respectively.
For the third phase of election, the last dates for filing of nomination papers and withdrawal of nominations are March 19 and March 22 respectively. The election process will be over well ahead of the Bohag Bihu.
The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak is glaringly visible on the poll schedule announced by the CEC. According to him, a candidate will be allowed to use only two cars while going to submit his or her nomination papers, and only two persons will be allowed to accompany him or her while filing the papers before the Returning Officer (RO).
This is not the only fallout of the pandemic on the Assembly election. According to the CEC, only five persons will be allowed to go for house-to-house poll campaign. These are apart from mandatory adherence to all the other COVID-19 protocols.
