GUWAHATI: NESAC (North-Eastern Space Application Centre) provided a drone to ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) for mapping disaster-prone areas in the state.

NESAC is a regional space centre established in September 2000 by a joint initiative of the Department of Space, Government of India, and North Eastern Council (NEC).

NESAC has already imparted training to ASDMA personnel on the use of state-of-the-art drones. The ASDMA personnel need more training.

On behalf of the State Government, ASDMA issued work orders to NESAC for the supply of five drones – two big and three small ones. NESAC may provide another drone to ASDMA with airdropping facilities in December this year.

When landslides cut off the Dima Hasao district by road and rail this year, the Assam Government had to hire drones for airdropping various items in the hill district. The other three drones are for surveillance. The ASDMA is contemplating surveying the disaster-prone areas of the state as a pilot project. If the pilot project proves successful, it will carry out more surveys in the state in phases. The project cost is around Rs 80 lakh.
