GUWAHATI/NAGAON/DHUBRI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is keeping in touch with Union Minister of External Affairs (MEA) S Jaishankar on the Assam students stranded in Ukraine.

Around 100 students from Assam are studying in various universities in Ukraine. After the Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, evacuation of the stranded students is urgent.

The Chief Minister said, "Union Minister S Jaishankar informed me that the Ministry of External Affairs is working closely with the Indian Embassy in Ukraine for the expeditious evacuation of students and residents, including those from Assam, stranded in that country. I wish to reassure all parents to have faith in the Government of India."

The Chief Minister has been taking up the issue of the stranded students in Ukraine from the first day of Russian airstrikes on Ukraine.

Some of the students from Assam have already returned to the state. Five students — Sakbir Hoque, Chiranjit Dutta, Harbi Dutta, Daisy Medhi and Sneha Adhyapok — arrived at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here on February 24.

Harbi Dutta, a Terbopil National Medical University student in Ukraine, said, "The situation was normal in the area where I lived. Following a blast near our university, all offline classes have stopped. The university authorities advised all students to be ready with essential documents to move to the basement floor in case of an emergency. The university has commenced classes online. So, there is not much to worry about.

"Fifty-sixty students from Assam are still stranded in the university following the cancellation of flights."

A Correspondent from Nagaon adds: Two medical students from Nagaon town are currently stranded inside their houses in Ukraine's capital Kyiv after Russian armies attacked the country. The duo and eight other medical students from Assam are waiting for help from the Government of India.

DHUBRI: A medical student, Ashique Hussain Sarkar of Hazarijharna village under Gauripur Police Station of the Dhubri district, is stranded in Ukraine.

Ashique is the son of retired BSF Jawan Noor Mahammad Sarkar. He is a student of Sumi State University in Ukraine for a six-year- medical course.

"Though the External Affairs Minister of India arranged the safe evacuation of students studying in the Southern part of Ukraine, no move has been taken to rescue the students studying in the northern part, including Sumi State University. We are worried about the wellbeing of my son and others with him," Noor Mahammad Sarkar said.
