Assam tops the list on the rate of crimes against women in 2020

GUWAHATI: Assam has topped the list of states on the rate of crimes against women in 2020. The crime rate against women in Assam in that year was 154.3 per lakh against the national average of 56.5 per lakh.

According to the NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) report, 2020 published recently, next to Assam in crime rates against women in 2020 is Odisha with a crime rate of 112.9 per lakh and Delhi with a crime rate of 106.4 per lakh.

The total number of crimes against women in 2020 in Assam is 26,352 – 1,657 rape cases, including 26 murders with rape/gang rape. In murder with rape/gang rape, Assam is next to Uttar Pradesh with 31 such cases and Madhya Pradesh with 27. Significantly, the crimes rates against women in the other seven states in the Northeast are much below the national average. The crime rate against women in Manipur in 2020 was 15.8 per lakh, 34.9 per lakh in Meghalaya, 28.8 per lakh in Mizoram, 3.7 per lakh in Nagaland, 44 per lakh in Tripura, and 44.2 per lakh in Sikkim.
