ASSAM-MIZORAM BORDER TENSION
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: Speaker of Assam Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami has expressed serious concern over the ongoing tension along the Assam-Mizoram border and asked the State Government to firmly deal with the situation.
The Speaker's concern came after the Congress and AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) raised the issue during the second day of the ongoing Assam Assembly session on Friday.
Earlier responding to the issue, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed the House that the State Government wants to solve the border issue through cooperation not conflict. He said that the Hailakandi administration is constantly in touch with its counterpart in Mizoram to defuse the tension on the inter-State boundary. He also said that the Special DG of Assam Police Border Organization is currently camping in Hailakandi to resolve the issue. An additional company of SSB will be deployed on the boundary, added the Minister.
Tension is prevailing along the inter-States boundary when some miscreants from Mizoram recently crossed the boundary, entered Assam, intimidated workers engaged in road construction, burned a few houses and resorted to blank firing at Jatanachera Gaon under Ramnathpur Police Station in Hailakandi. The incident took place on February 9.
