GUWAHATI: Sidelining founder party president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Atul Bora was unanimously re-elected AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) president on Thursday.
The 11th central general council meeting of the party was held at its headquarters at Ambari here on Thursday amidst a legal hurdle. The Civil Court had issued a notice to the party on Wednesday not to hold its 11th general council meeting till November 19, 2020. However, re-elected party president Atul Bora said that they got the Court's notice after an hour of conclusion of the meeting. He also said that the party is taking the advice of legal experts for the next course of action in the aftermath of the Court's notice.
After his re-election, Bora said, "There are differences of opinions in the party. However, there's no dissidence of any sort. The differences can be sorted out. The party has challenges ahead. We need to overcome them. Now the thrust is on increasing the number of seats from the present 14."
A sidelined Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said, "The way the general council meeting of the party was held is a sheer violation of the constitution of the party."
Mahanta dropped a broad hint that he might move the Court against the election of party president. He was at Ambari here when the meeting was underway. He, however, opted not to attend it.
On the contrary, re-elected party president Atul Bora said, "Today's general council's meeting of the party was well within our constitution. All members were present at the conference."
As soon as the conference began, senior leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury stood up and proposed the name of Atul Bora for the post of party president, leading to his unanimous re-election. On his part, Atul Bora proposed the name of Keshab Mahanta for the post of working president, and the members elected him too unanimously.
Senior party leader Dr. Kamala Kalita said, "The Congress-AIUDF is an alliance of opportunists. The AIUDF was born with its angst against the Congress. However, now, the two parties have joined hands."
