GUWAHATI: Eminent Assamese litterateur Atulananda Goswami breathed his last at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) early this morning due to old age-related problems. He was 87.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "His works received great acclaim and are admired for their diversity and sensitivity. He made great efforts to popularize Assamese literature in English. I express my condolence to his family members and admirers!"
From the Governor to the Chief Minister, all connected to the literary world expressed condolences for the demise of the renowned writer.
Late Goswami was admitted to the GMCH ten days back for age-related problems. Writer Goswami's son lit the pyre at Nabagraha, where his mortal remains were consigned to flames later in the day.
A native of the Jorhat district, Late Goswami was widely known for his novel 'Naamghoria' written in the early 1990s. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2006 for his short-story collection 'Seneh Jarir Ganthi'. He also received the Ambikagiri Raichoudhury Sahitya Award, Kumar Kishor Memorial Award, Katha Award, Sneha Bharati Sahitya Samman, and Assam Valley Literary Award etc. Goswami also translated many English, Bengali and Odiya texts into Assamese.
Condoling his death, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The news of passing away of prominent litterateur Atulananda Goswami has deeply saddened me. We will forever cherish his contribution to the literary as well as social life of Assam."
