GUWAHATI: The oompah of brass cymbals and the staccato of khols through naam prasanga in the xatras and naamghars of Assam welcomed the auspicious Assamese month of Bhado today. The auspicious month of Bhado began today. This month is auspicious as two great men of Assam, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and Mahapurush Madhabdev, passed away in this month. Apart from this, this month is considered auspicious as Lord Krishna was born in it.
From time immemorial, the Assamese people held naam prasanga, Bhagwat path, Bhaona, and the like in the entire month of Bhado.
The Batadrava Than in the Nagaon district where Srimanta Sankardev was born, Letekupukhuri in the Lakhimpur district where Mahapurush Madhabdev was born, Barpeta Xatra, where these two great men met, and other xatras and naamghars are agog with religious fervour and festivities.
Speaking to The Sentinel, the Xatradhikar of Batadrava Than (Narowa Xatra), Devananda Dev Goswami, said, "We have stepped into the auspicious month of 31-day Bhado from today. This auspicious month will conclude on September 18, 2023. From today, we will continue to hold 18-prasanga naam prasanga, Bhagawat path etc. in all 31 days, besides bhaona. Eighteen-prasanga (chanting of Naam Prasanga for 18 times) starts at 4 a.m. in the morning and concludes around 9.30 p.m. Bhakat-vaishnabs (devotees) and ayotis (elder women taking part in naam prasanga) and others take part in all such programmes. This year, the Tithi of Madhabdev is on 17 Bhado (September 4), Srikrishna Janmastomi on 19 Bhado (September 6), and the Tithi of Srimanta Sankardev on 29 Bhado (September 16). These three tithis will have more programmes of diverse hues."
Madhupur Xatra in Cooch-Behar also started Naam Prasanga and other programmes today.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wished the people of the state luck for the auspicious month of Bhado.
