GUWAHATI: All's is not well in road renovation in Assam, especially in Guwahati. Take the Noonmati Road from Madgharia-Kharghuli as a case study. This road bears testimony to sheer lack of cooperation among the GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority), PWD, and the Guwahati Refinery among others.
Some stretches of this road have big potholes that give drivers and riders a hellish experience, let alone pedestrians. At the bend near the petrol depot in the Noonmati area of this road, its top layer has peeled off, leaving a number of craters. This spot is prone to accidents.
When asked on the road, a worker of the petrol depot said, "The condition of the road has been pathetic for the past six months. This road was renovated around six months back. However, its top layer has got peeled off again."
MK Das, a resident of Madgharia, said, "I ride my bike on this road every day. The offices of the Guwahati Refinery and the IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) are located by its side. Heavy trucks regularly ply on this road. This road is also used by truckers to go to the FCI (Food Corporation of India) godowns at New Guwahati for loading and unloading. However, the renovation of this road has never been made fit to withstand the pressure which heavy vehicles exert on it. This leads to frequent damage of the road.
"The problem is not with the road bend near the petrol depot alone. In fact, this road has craters at various spots on its entire stretch. This road bears testimony to the sheer lack of coordination among the GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority), PWD, and the Guwahati Refinery etc."
