GUWAHATI: Beware of a message (from an unknown number) that reads 'Dear Consumer, Your Electricity power will be disconnected tomorrow at 9:30 pm from the electricity office because your last month's bill payment was not updated. Please contact immediately our electricity officer at … (a mobile number). Thank you.'

When an APDCL consumer calls the number given in the SMS, a Hindi-speaking person responds to the caller and talk to him about the non-payment of the power bill. The person also asks the APDCL consumer to pay Rs 30 through a mobile app as an SMS charge to the individual's telephone. If any power consumer sends the money through the mobile app, he may end up disclosing his bank details to the frauds. The frauds may empty the power consumer's bank account in no time.

APDCL sources said, "We never send such messages from an unknown number to our power consumers. All messages from us to power consumers will be from 'DAPDCL', not from an unknown number. It is the handiwork of fraud. We have already complained to the police in this regard. If you receive any such message, you should complain about the number '1912' or the nearest APDCL subdivision."
