GUWAHATI: Amidst the controversy over the exact location of the Sixth Jyotirlinga, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma affirmed, citing the Shiva Puran, that “Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is in Kamrup Pradesh.”
The Chief Minister visited the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga at Pamohi, atop the Dakini Hill on the outskirts of Guwahati, this morning. He also prayed to the Jyotirlinga on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
Speaking to the media after the prayer, the Chief Minister said, ”The Shiva Puran cracked the mystery of Kotilingas. The puran says that the Bhimashankar Jyotilinga appeared in Kamrup Pradesh. The Shiva Puran also mentioned the Dakini Hill, Kamrup, and the king of Kamrup. Our faith in the location of Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga has its basis in the Shiva Puran. The mention of Kamrupa appears nowhere else. The 20th and 21st chapters of the Shiva Puran crack the mystery of Jyotirlinga. These two chapters make it clear that the Bhimashankar Jyotir Linga is in Kamrup.”
On the recent outbursts of the Opposition parties in Maharashtra, the Chief Minister said, “A section of people in Maharashtra feels that we took the Jyotirlinga from Maharashtra. We have the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga from thousands of years ago, not after the BJP-Shiv Sena government came to the helm of affairs in Maharashtra. The Opposition in Maharashtra feels that we have erected the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga now. We have not made it. It’s an ancient shrine. No question of debate arises on this issue. Lord Shiva is in Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, Assam, and everywhere. And this is the essence of the Sanatan Hindu Dharma. Nobody should drag God into politics.”
When asked about the development of the temple, he said, “Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is on forest land. It’s not possible, nor is it right, to develop the temple infrastructure. It’s better to keep the shrine in all its pristine beauty. The Dakini Hill also has the stones used in the Gupta dynasty era.”
