GUWAHATI: Fed by Himalayan water from Bhutan the Four rivers – Aei, Champabati, Swrmanga and Makra – caused havoc in the BTR. The issue worried the State Assembly on Tuesday when UPPL MLA Jayanta Basumatary raised it.

Basamatary said that waters from Bhutan flow to Assam through the bordering districts and cause floods and erosion, damaging human habitations and croplands annually.

In his response, Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika said that as several rivers in the Chirang district flow from the foothills of Bhutan, their current is strong. These rivers cause more erosion along their banks in the Assam side, he said.

The State Government has taken up the matter with BTR authorities to control the flood and erosion problems, Hazarika added.

He, however, pointed that since the length of the rivers flowing through Chirang is not much, planned action can help mitigate the problems.

"I have already held talks with the BTR chief, and I shall visit Chirang soon. We shall discuss it with all stakeholders to take steps to tame the rivers to control the flood and erosion problems," Hazarika added.
