GUWAHATI: The BJP and its ally swept the municipal board election by securing a majority in 75 of the 80 municipal boards in the state. While the AGP and independent candidates got the majority of two municipal boards each, the Congress got a majority in one. The State Election Commission (SEC) declared the results of the civic body polls today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the state BJP for the party sweeping the municipal board elections in the state. The BJP and the AGP did not have understanding in Bongaigaon, Barpeta and some other municipal boards in lower Assam. The two parties tied up in other municipal boards.
According to SEC sources, the BJP and its ally won in 759 wards. Congress distantly followed it with 76 wards. Independent and other candidates won 141 wards. On its own, the AGP won 65 wards.
Significantly, the BJP made inroads into some minority-dominated wards and won seats. The Congress got majority only in Narayanpur Municipal Board under Bihpuria LAC.
In Bongaigaon Municipal Board, the BJP won 13 wards, and the AGP followed it with 11. In Barpeta Municipal Board, the AGP got 11 wards, and the BJP got 9. The municipal board polls were due in March 2020. However, the SEC could not hold them due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
