GUWAHATI: BJP’s national secretary and Northeast in-charge Ram Madhab has said that his party has performed better in the Lok Sabha election in Assam this year than 2014, and is going to win ten seats on its own.

The BJP fielded candidates in ten Lok Sabha constituencies in the State, leaving three seats for the AGP and one seat for the BPF, its alliance partners.

Addressing the media at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday, Madhab said: “This is because the people have seen the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his performance and report card. All these were done in the past five years for the development on Assam and other States in the Northeast. We’re confident that our report card will speak for us.”

Madhab said: “The Congress has nothing to showcase before the people. The Northeast has become free from Congress. We’ve six governments in alliance in the region. All the leaders of the Congress who were rejected elsewhere in the country have come to Assam, seeking votes. The people of Assam understand who they actually are.”

On the problem of infiltration into Assam, Madhab said that the Congress had done nothing to stop infiltration into Assam. In 1967 when people from erstwhile East Pakistan infiltrated into Assam, the then Congress government had done precious little, he said and added that the Congress government had started the NRC update but stopped at the stage of the pilot project. The Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government is taking the NRC update process forward under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India, he said. According to him, Congress never took any initiatives to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The BJP government is here to protect, preserve and develop languages, literature and cultures of Assam and other States in the Northeast, he added.
