DIBRUGARH: Huge potholes appeared on the Bogibeel approach road, causing difficulties for motorists. Due to the non-maintenance of the Bogibeel approach road, potholes have emerged, causing an immense problem for the people.

Ram Newar, a resident of Bogibeel, said, "Big potholes have emerged on both sides of the Bogibeel approach road causing difficulties for motorists. For the last several months, the approach road was badly damaged, but the department concerned is doing nothing to repair it. I frequently travel from the Bogibeel bridge and face problems due to the worst condition of the approach road. Anytime, accidents can happen due to potholes. The PWD should immediately repair the road."

The Bogibeel bridge connects Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts. Everyday people from both districts cross the bridge. Patients from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Arunachal Pradesh come to Dibrugarh for treatment. Many patients who come to Assam for treatment complain about the bad condition of the approach road.

Pranjal Gogoi, a resident of Lakhimpur who came to the AMCH for his brother's treatment faced problems due to the bad condition of the approach road.

"If immediate steps are not taken to repair the approach road, anytime accidents can take place," Gogoi said.

Speaking to The Sentinel on Tuesday, Rahul Amin, executive engineer, of NH Dibrugarh Division of the state PWD, said, "NF Railway has been maintaining the Bogibeel approach road from the beginning. Recently, they handed over the Bogibeel approach road to the PWD. Due to lack of maintenance, the Bogibeel approach road has been damaged and big potholes have emerged."

"NF Railway did not do any maintenance work on the Bogibeel approach road. The 2.2-km stretch of South Bank and the 4.6-km stretch of North Bank approach road got damaged due to lack of maintenance. We have conducted a survey. We are making estimates for the construction of the damaged road. Very soon we will start our repair work," said Amin.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bogibeel bridge on December 25, 2018, and since then, the bridge has been playing a crucial role in connectivity in the region.
