GUWAHATI: Against the backdrop of undergraduate (UG) students agitating against, as they say, not getting the benefits of the fee waiver scheme, the State Government today claimed that the UG students continue to avail of the benefits of the scheme this year as well.
According to sources in the Higher Education Department, as many as 1,16,000 (76.4 percent) UG students have already taken free admission in UG programmes under the Fee Waiver Scheme under Pragyan Bharati of Higher Education so far. The sources further said that the number of UG students availing of the fee waiver scheme will go up after the inclusion of the students of the colleges affiliated with Assam University, Silchar. The sources also said that 35,800 students have taken admission this year without any fee waiver.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said on social media, "There is no reason why the universities should not give the benefits of the fee waiver scheme to BPL students whose parents' annual income is less than Rs 2 lakh. The State Government has been regularly reimbursing the waived fees to the universities. The universities are requested to admit eligible BPL students by waiving their admission fees and claiming reimbursement through the Samarth_eGov portal."
According to the Education Minister, the fee waiver scheme is applicable to HS, BA, B.Sc., B.Com., and M.A., M.Com., and M.Sc. courses, barring students from taking admission in any self-financing courses. The Department reimbursed Rs 7.12280 lakh (100 percent) to Gauhati University, Rs 29.74854 lakh (100 percent) to Dibrugarh University, Rs 100.63850 lakh (100 percent) to Bodoland University, Rs 16.45005 lakh (74 percent) to Cotton University, Rs 37.55279 lakh (100 percent) to Kumar Bhaskar Verma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Rs 23.77449 lakh (100 percent) to Women's University, Rs 9.93600 lakh (100 percent) to Majuli University of Culture, Rs 24.27742 lakh (74 percent) to Madhabdev University, Rs 23.17385 lakh (75 percent) to Bhattadev University, and Rs 29.64250 lakh (74 percent) to Rabindranath Tagore University.
