GUWAHATI: Following heavy rains upstream in Arunachal Pradesh, the Brahmaputra and the Desang rivers are flowing above their danger levels, leading to the suspension of IWT (Inland Water Transport) services in Guwahati and some other places in the state.

The Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC), Guwahati, forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with lightning very likely over Assam and likely to continue for the next five days.

One hundred villages in four districts in the state are still under flood waters, affecting 48,747 people. The district-wise breakup of the villages is 45 in Biswanath, 38 in Lakhimpur, 15 in Dhemaji, and two in Kokrajhar.

The administration has set up 11 relief camps in Dhemaji and four in Biswanath. The deluge also damaged various infrastructures at Chabua, Gohpur, Sonari, Bokakhat, Halem, Bihpuria, Naoboicha, Mahmora, Dotoma, etc.

The State Water Resources Department anticipates fresh floods in the state if rainfall continues upstream. The department alerted its engineers to keep watch on the vulnerable embankments and asked them to take immediate preventive measures where needed.

Drinking water is one of the major problems in the flood-affected villages. The scarcity of fodder has also affected families that have livestock. Though the district administrations have supplied fodder, there are allegations of uneven distribution.
