GUWAHATI: The construction of the bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Palasbari and Sualkuchi is slowly but certainly going to be a reality, with the State Government engaging Rodic Consultants as the authority engineer for the project. On behalf of the State Government, Rodic Consultants will monitor the entire construction of the project.

Rodic Consultants is a front-running infrastructure consultancy in India.

According to sources, the State PWD does not have adequate manpower to keep an eye on every aspect of such a mega project, hence the need for the services of a third-party consultancy. This consultancy will monitor the entire construction of the project and report to the State Government. The State PWD (EAP) will execute the project at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,600 crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the bridge in April this year, when he was in Guwahati in connection with the mega Bihu recital.

The New Development Bank will fund the much-talked-about bridge over the Brahmaputra. The State Government had applied to the New Development Bank for funds through the Government of India for this mega project. The name of the project is “Construction of a four-lane Extradosed PSC Bridge over the River Brahmaputra connecting Palasbari and Sualkuchi, including via ducts, approaches, river training works, etc., in EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) mode.

The proposed 3,600-metre bridge over the River Brahmaputra—having multi-span extradosed units of PSC superstructure, 216-metre via-duct, 5,387-metre approach road with one traffic junction at National Highway-17 with service road on Palashbari side, 216-metre via-duct, 864-metre elevated road, and 1927-metre approach road with service road and one rotary at the end—will meet at Bongsor Sualkuchi Road on the North Bank. The total length of the project is 12.21 km. The main bridge is a 4-lane carriageway with an overall width of 28 metres. The project starts at Kaita Sidhi on NH-17 (near Mirza) on the south bank, crosses the River Brahmaputra, and terminates at Bongsor Sualkuchi Road on the north bank. The river training and protection works are one of the main scopes of work under the project.
