GUWAHATI: The State budget will chart out the roadmap to fulfil the electoral promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition in the State. The State budget 2022-23 will be presented by State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on March 16.

Talking to media persons today after the Assembly session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "During the last Assembly polls, we had announced the measures we will be taking up for the welfare of the State. The State budget has been prepared in a way to transform our electoral commitments into reality."

He further said that the government aimed to achieve a domestic income target of Rs 8 lakh crore in the next five years. "We will work keeping this goal in mind," said the Chief Minister. He added that the budget would touch upon issues like how to enhance economic growth, how people would get land rights and how the government could procure products from people's houses.

Earlier, during the Governor's speech on the first day of the budget session, the Opposition MLAs maintained decorum and did not disrupt the House proceedings. "Since last year, the Opposition has not disrupted the Governor's speech. This is a healthy sign for democracy," the Chief Minister told media persons and went on to thank the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, Congress Legislature Party (CLP), AIUDF Legislature Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Regarding the upcoming elections to two seats of the Rajya Sabha (RS), the Chief Minister said that the BJP-AGP-UPPL alliance would be fielding two candidates and expressed confidence in winning both seats. The RS polls for the two seats in Assam will be held on March 31.
