GUWAHATI: In accordance to a Supreme Court direction, the ECI (Election Commission of India) has informed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Assam that candidates with criminal cases – either pending or of conviction in the past – must declare such information in the public domain.
The ECI stated that the direction must be brought to the notice of the candidates, adding that even after that if any candidate fails to publish the declaration in the newspapers, they shall be issued notice by the CEO.
The ECI added that during the election campaign period, such candidates must declare the information thrice in newspapers and television channels.
At the same time, the political parties sponsoring such candidates will have to upload these details in their respective websites. Moreover, the political parties will also have to submit a report about publishing of declaration regarding criminal cases to the CEO of the State within 30 days of declaration of result of the election.
The ECI further directed the CEO to circulate the direction to all the political parties based in the State or the State units of the recognised parties and recognised State parties of other States and all registered and un-recognised National or State political parties with headquarters based in the State.
