GUWAHATI: The Assam State Election Commission (SEC) has said that candidates for the municipal board elections who have criminal antecedents will have to inform the public of their criminal backgrounds.

According to SEC sources, if any candidate of the municipal board election has criminal antecedents, he (she) will have to inform the people of their criminal background during their campaign through newspapers and television channels thrice.

The SEC has not also spared political parties fielding candidates with criminal antecedents for the forthcoming municipal board elections. The parties will also have to inform the public of the criminal antecedents of their candidates, if any, through newspapers and television channels thrice, besides party websites. And they will have to do it during the poll campaign period.

The municipal board election in the state is on March 6, and the counting is on March 9. The last date for filing nominations is February 15, and the scrutiny is on February 17. And the date for withdrawal of candidature is February 20.

Eighty of the 81 municipal boards of the state will go to the polls. The eighty municipal boards together have 977 wards. The SEC has not issued the poll notification of the Silchar Municipal Board as a case is pending in the Gauhati High Court.
