GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the coming census would be the first 'digital census' in India.

Inaugurating an office building of the Directorate of Census Operations at Amingaon today, Shah said, "The field works of the Census-2021 were postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It will be an e-census. It will be 100 per cent perfect. In a demographically sensitive state like Assam, the census is important. The government will prepare the development roadmap for the next 25 years based on the data of this census."

Shah said, "People mostly talk about lacunae. They hardly discuss the ways to solve them. We need proper planning. Planning will be accurate if the census data are accurate. We will make software and link it with birth and death registration. It will make entry of newborns into census registration automatic soon after birth. After attaining 18 years of age, the person's name will automatically enter the voter list from the Census office. The newly inaugurated census building will play its role in the census in Assam and the entire Northeastern region. It shall act as the focal centre for scanning and mapping activities for the Northeast.
