Charles III crowned King, Camilla coronated and crowned with Queen Mary’s crown

LONDON: As King Charles III was crowned, gun salutes were fired from 13 locations across the UK including Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, and on deployed Royal Navy ships, CNN reported.

The largest, a 62-round salute, happened from the Tower of London. A six-gun salute took place at Horse Guards Parade and 21 rounds were fired at the remaining locations. The bells of Westminster Abbey rang out to celebrate the historic moment, CNN reported.

After the King was crowned, Queen Camilla received her own coronation, albeit in a slightly different form.

Like her husband, she was anointed with holy oil by the Archbishop of Canterbury, but without a screen, which demonstrates the different nature of anointing a consort compared to a reigning sovereign, CNN reported.

The Keeper of the Jewel House then presents the Consort's Ring, which symbolizes promise and commitment, "marrying" her to the King and both to God and their people.

Then, she was crowned with Queen Mary's Crown, marking the first time in recent history that a new crown wasn't made specifically for this occasion, and presented with the Sceptre and Rod, CNN reported.

Finally, Camilla was enthroned. This was followed by an original composition by Andrew Lloyd Webber that sets verses from Psalm 98 to music.

The royal monarchs on their way back to the palace travelled in a different carriage known as the "Gold State Coach," which was constructed in 1762. It also carries significant historic value as it was employed for King George III's travel to the State Opening of Parliament.

Queen Camilla wore a dress designed by Bruce Oldfield and created in the designer's couture workrooms in Battersea, London.

The royals would have taken good care of the carriage's comfort, as the former Queen Elizabeth's comment about the grand barouche's comfort was negative. The Queen herself said, "Horrible! It's only sprung on a lever. Not very comfortable," as earlier reported by the magazine.

The coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London marks King Charles III as the 40th royal monarch.

Meanwhile, anti-monarchists protested in London during the coronation of Britain's King Charles III, despite warnings from authorities and a controversial new law, reported The New York Times (NYT).

Emma Bubola, writing in the NYT, said that anti-monarchists see the coronation as an opportunity to highlight the absurdity of having a royal family in the 21st century. A 21-year-old student in the northern city of Leeds ordered 50 beach balls bearing the words "No more royals." Republic, a group representing Britain's anti-monarchist movement wearing yellow T-shirts, booed and shouted "Not My King" throughout the morning.

Several anti-monarchy protesters were arrested in central London ahead of the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, according to CNN.

They were questioning spending money on such an opulent event as the cost of living crisis continues to grip the country.

Stubbornly high inflation, years of wage stagnation, and the sudden and steep rise in energy prices have left millions of Brits on the brink of poverty. Yet at the same time, the UK government is getting ready to spend tens of millions of taxpayers' money on a glitzy event celebrating one very, very rich man: King Charles III, according to CNN.
