GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has spelt out what his government will do in the remaining period of his term. The State Government under Sarma completed two years today and will step into the third year on May 10.

Speaking to the media today, the Chief Minister said, “The first goal of the government is to bring back an atmosphere of peace in the state to let the youth of the state see a ray of hope. We have made strides on the peace front, and I hope to get the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Power Act) withdrawn from the remaining five districts of the state by 2023. The other goal of the State Government is to increase the conviction rate so as not to let criminals go unpunished. Earlier, the conviction rate in the state was 4-6 percent, which rose to 14 percent last year. We hope to make it on par with the national level in the next two years. To make that happen, we are going to appoint dedicated judicial cadres, lay more importance on technology in the investigation of cases, etc.”

On the dairy front, the Chief Minister said, “The State Government will bring the milk to be produced in the state under one brand name. Various cooperative societies give different brand names to their milk, and that eludes the state’s own brand name. Apart from the prices given to the milk farmers by the cooperative societies, the government will give a premium to the farmers at the rate of Rs 5 per litre.”

The Chief Minister said, “The State Government has set the target of procuring 20 lakh quintals of paddy annually in the coming five years. The State Government will procure paddy from the state farmers to replace FCI in the procurement process.”

On the health front, he said, “Each medical college in the state will have B.Sc. and M.Sc. nursing colleges that will also have courses in a foreign language and soft skills. The purpose is to create nurses for the global market.”

On education, the Chief Minister said, “The government will set up 40 new colleges and form the Assam Sainik School Society. Under this, the State Government will set up five more Sainik schools in the state.”

In the case of infrastructure development, Sarma said, “Projects worth Rs 12,000 crore are underway under the scheme, Asom Mala. Our target is to put in place the Guwahati Ring Road, an elevated corridor in Kaziranga, and a bridge across the Brahmaputra to collect Golaghat and Gohpur. We will complete the remaining works of the East-West Corridor in one year and a half.”

He further said that the State Government relies more on online to end corruption in the state administration. “The police will receive an FIR through an App. We will make all services faceless by 2026, when the public will not have to visit offices to get their work done. They will get all services done online,” he said.

He said, “For around seven months of the past two years, the government has had to fight a relentless battle with COVID-19. In essence, the government had 17 months to work. However, due to the utmost dedication of the ministers, the government could do this much. I seek blessings from the public to be able to provide an efficient and corruption-free administration in the remaining three years.”
