TINSUKIA: Synchronizing with the observance of the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone and performed bhumi puja of the Rs 60.21-crore railway overbridge project at the Sripuria level-crossing in Tinsukia on Tuesday. He was accompanied by State PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior State and Railway officials.

Spanning over 563.40m, the bridge on the LMB Road will be constructed at 50:50 cost sharing. While the Railway Ministry will bear half of the cost, the City Infra Development Fund (CIDF) of Assam will provide 50 per cent of the project cost.

Addressing a public gathering at the nearby Golap Chandra Rabi Chandra Natya Mandir, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the condition of the road had improved significantly from Dibrugarh to Tinsukia since his last visit in June but needed further improvement. Assuring that he would visit Tinsukia in November again to see the progress, Sarma informed that 13 more Railway overbridges of the 26 railway crossings would be constructed across the State this fiscal. He announced that Tinsukia would have a full-fledged office of the PWD Executive Engineer (Building Division) and also an office of the Superintending Engineer (Roads) to supervise the three road divisions in Tinsukia district.

In his address, the Chief Minister said, “We must not celebrate the birthday of a great luminary like Narendra Modi with festivities but ought to make his vision fulfilled through humanitarian services which he acquired in his lifetime."

Sonowal further said, “Tinsukia being a commercial hub since the British era, its contribution is immense in the economic growth of the country.” While urging the people of Tinsukia to build a model society in Assam, the Chief Minister lauded the multi-lingual and multi-cultural integrity of Tinsukia. The celebration of ‘Seva Saptah’ — the week-long observance of Narendra Modi’s birthday — should be coincided with cleanliness, plantation and ban on single-use plastics, he observed.

Earlier, while welcoming the dignitaries, Tinsukia MLA Sanjay Kishan explained the scheme to the gathering. Rameswar Teli, Union Minister for Food Processing, Rajesh Kemprai Commissioner and Special Secretary, PWD, legislators Bhaskar Sharma (Margherita) and Tarash Gowala ( Duliajan) were present among others.
