GUWAHATI: The CID arrested four Bajali police personnel on the charge of extortion from a supari trader.

The four police personnel are Bhawanipur outpost in-charge SI (P) Debajit Giri, ABC Injamamul Hassan (PSO of Gayatri Sonowal, the then Bajali ASP HQ), home guard Deepjoy Roy (driver to Bajalai SP), and home guard Nabir Ahmed (part-time driver of Bajali SP).

Though the CID let Bajali DSP (HQ) Puskal Gogoi go last night after grilling him, the investigators grilled him today also. The CID took all five arrested policemen into five-day custody today after producing them before the court. The CID also detained Kishor Baruah, who worked as the middleman between the Bajali Police and supari trader Rabiul Islam, today. The CID also summoned several other police personnel in connection with the extortion case. The CID sleuths are carrying out raids in Bajali.

According to sources, the police went to Rabiul's house, beat him up, and put pressure on him, demanding cash, besides seizing his bank passbooks, ATM cards, car key, mobile handset, passport, etc. The police also threatened him to show his involvement in several other cases. The police also threatened to shoot him down if he did not cooperate with them. The police also demanded Rs 5 lakh for giving Rabiul back the articles seized from him.

Rabiul's family told the CID that several other top police officers were also involved in the extortion attempt.

Rabiul filed a complaint with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. However, the directorate failed to trap the erring policemen. He then lodged a complaint with the CID.
