Citizenship (Amendment) Bill Will Not Be Passed In Rajya Sabha: Yashwant Sinha

GUWAHATI: A day after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted that his Government was going ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill,2019, former top BJP leader Yashwant Sinha on Sunday predicted that the controversial Bill would not be passed in the Rajya Sabha.

Yashwant Sinha who was the Finance Minister in the former Atal Behari Vajpayee-led NDA regime at the Centre, also said the Narendra Modi would not come back to power for the second time.

Delivering his lecture on the topic of ‘State of the Nation and the Way Forward’ organized by Asom Nagarik Samaj in the city on Sunday, Sinha said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is a violation of the historic Assam Accord and goes against the secular spirit of Indian Constitution. He said the Bill does not have worthy credentials to become a law.

“Both the Houses of Parliament are being stalled. Besides that, I have been interacting with different people before coming here. I understood that except BJP, other political parties are firmly against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. I doubt that the ruling party will dare to pass the Citizenship Bill in the Upper House amid the ruckus. As the ongoing session is the last Parliament session of this Government, there is no chance that the Bill will be passed,” Yashwant Sinha said.

Sinha said that the indigenous people of the North East are faced with existential threat due to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. “If someone tries to end someone’s existential, people will object and protest. The people of the north-eastern States are objecting and protesting as they are facing an existential threat due to this Bill,” he said, adding that the rest of India is behind NE’s movement against the Bill.

According to Sinha, “the Bill is incorrect from all aspects – legal and constitutional. Besides, it is also against the ethos of the whole country.”
