Civic body poll peaceful, turnout 70% in Assam

GUWAHATI: Around 70 per cent of voters cast votes in the 80 municipal board elections in the state on Sunday. The polling was peaceful.

According to the Assam State Election Commission (SEC), the final voters' turnout may change later.

As many as 2,532 candidates vied for their luck in the civic body election. While the BJP had 825 candidates, the Congress had 706, AGP had 243 and others, including independents, had 758 candidates.

The election took place through EVMs (electronic voting machines) for the first time in municipal board poll in the state, instead of secret ballots. The SEC shifted the EVMs to the strongrooms in the district and sub-divisional headquarters.

Talking to The Sentinel, SEC secretary Pranjit Gogoi said, "We have not received any request for re-poll from anywhere. There was no untoward incident like booth capturing and other violence during the poll. Counting of votes will be on March 9."

The results of the polls may come by the evening.

The 80 municipal boards have 977 wards, and 57 candidates won unopposed. The election took place in 920 wards.
