GUWAHATI: The State Government has sought suggestions on the implementation of Clause VI of the Assam Accord from the AASU (All Assam Students Union). The student body, on the contrary, has said that it will think of extending suggestions on Clause VI of the Accord only after the government extends the term of the subcommittee formed for the purpose.
The AASU had five members in the subcommittee which included three ministers.
Talking to The Sentinel, AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, "The State Government formed a subcommittee for the implementation of the Assam Accord with special emphasis on its Clause VI, in November-end, 2021. The government gave the subcommittee three months' time to submit its report. Unfortunately, the government called only a few meetings of the subcommittee. The subcommittee could not submit its report because of the fewer meetings. The term of the subcommittee expired in January this year. The AASU cannot extend suggestions on the implementation of Clause VI when the subcommittee formed for the purpose is no longer valid. We will think of extending suggestions to the government only after it (the government) extends the term of the subcommittee."
The AASU leader said, "The MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) formed the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma-led high-level committee for recommendations on the implementation of Clause VI of the Assam Accord during the tenure of the last State Government. The AASU had representatives as members of the high-level committee. The high-level committee submitted its recommendations to the government."
The AASU leader said that the student body would hold its central executive meeting on September 28 in Guwahati. "We will discuss various government issues, including socio-economic and educational ones," he said.
