SHILLONG: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to 578 police officials, who passed out today, to be compassionate to people's problems.

Five hundred and seventy-eight trainee Sub Inspectors of the Assam Police, including 178 lady trainee officers, passed out of the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) on their successful completion of basic course today. It is the 50th batch.

The Chief Minister said, "The police should always take the side of civilians. We need to raise the police stations to the level so that women can go to police stations at midnight without fear and hesitation."

Quoting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he said, "Nabbing and identifying criminals are not the only duty of the police. They need to win people's hearts."

He said, "Amidst the challenges, the police need to be courageous and sincere, besides remaining accountable to their duty. In the fight against drugs and criminals in the past ten months, we have sent the message that anti-social forces have no room in society."

It is the largest-ever batch in the history of NEPA since its inception in 1978. The passing-out parade took place at the Parade Ground of the Academy at Umsaw Village, Ri-Bhoi District.

Chief Minister Sarma reviewed the parade and commissioned the officers into active policing.

Sarma congratulated the young officers and distributed the trophies and medals awarded to the trainees for their performance during the training period.

Cadet Sub-Inspector Baharul Islam, who commanded the parade, got the Governor of Meghalaya's Sword of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal, for being the all-around best cadet.

While Cadet Sub-Inspector Noor Neha Begum got the Chief Minister of Meghalaya 'Baton of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal' for being the best cadet in indoor subjects, Cadet Sub-Inspector Biplab Gohain received the Chief Minister Arunachal Pradesh 'Baton of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal for being the best cadet in outdoor subjects. The B R Lall Academy Trophy & NEPA Silver Medal for exemplary conduct went to Cadet Sub Inspector Mritunjoy Singha.

These officers got their training on a well-researched module approved by the Bureau of Police Research & Development, Government of India.
