GUWAHATI: Both Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have rejected the proposal of establishing a 'Miya Museum' at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here.
Congress' Bagbhor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed did write a letter to the Director of Museums, Assam stating that one museum depicting the culture and heritage of the people living in the sar-saporis of Assam should be established at the Kalakshetra. Later,Ahmed mentioned that the museum would be named as 'Miya Museum.'
Since then, there has been a controversy in the State. There have been mixed reactions from various political figures.
In this regard, without mentioning the name of the museum, Chief Minister Sonowal rejected Ahmed's proposal on Monday, and said, "Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra was established following the ideology of Srimanta Sankardev. We need to work with devotion to keep the ideology of the Saint alive."
Earlier, strongly rejecting the proposal, Finance Minster Himanta Biswa Sarma posted a tweet on his twitter handle. "In my understanding, there is no separate identity and culture in the Char Anchal of Assam as most of the people had migrated from Bangladesh. Obviously, in Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakhetra, which is the epitome of Assamese culture, we will not allow any distortion," tweeted Sarma.
The 16-member Departmentally Related Standing Committee (DRSC) of the Education department headed by MLA Utpal Dutta has had discussions on its head of grant for art and culture. The committee recommended that one museum reflecting the culture and heritage of the people living in the sar-saporis of Assam shall be established at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati. The report was presented to the Assam Legislative Assembly on March 24, 2020. Based on these recommendations, Ahmed wrote a letter to the Directorate of Museums on October 18, 2020.
