GUWAHATI: A Bench of the Gauhati High Court has upheld Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami's order derecognizing CLP (Congress Legislature Party) leader Debabrata Saikia as the 'Leader of Opposition' in the august House.

The Speaker had to derecognize the 'Leader of Opposition status of Saikia as the strength of Congress in the State Assembly has been reduced to 19, which is less than one-sixth of the total strength of 126 in the House.

The order of the Speaker was challenged in the Gauhati High Court by Saikia, leading to its stay till the final hearing on Wednesday.

The Bench of Justice Achintya Malla Bujor Barua dismissed the plea of Saikia and upheld the order of the Speaker.
