DHUBRI: The Sikh Pratinidhi Board Eastern Zone (SPBEZ), Dhubri Saheb, the managing body of Gurudwara Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji, Dhubri, as well as the apex representative body of the Sikh community residing in Northeast India, has resented the recent claim by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) that Gurdwara Guru Nanak Tapasthan, Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh has been converted into a Buddhist shrine
A press release issued by SPBEZ stated that as per travel records of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, he had made religious journeys to different places and there is a historical reference of his visit to Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh. Gurdwara Guru Nanak Tapasthan, Mechuka was established in the memory of his visit, with the support of the Indian Army. It was handed over to the ‘Sangat’ in March 1987.
It is highly unfortunate that a mischievous attempt has been made by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh to destroy the memorial shrine of the first Sikh Guru, showing the historical Sikh shrine as a Buddhist shrine, the release further resented.
It also stated that this act had seriously hurt the Sikh sentiments. While pointing out to an Act of the Constitution, it stated that converting the historical Gurdwara Guru Nanak Tapasthan, Mechuka into a Buddhist shrine directly violates Article 25 of the Constitution.
Talking to The Sentinel, secretary of SPBEZ, Sardar Kulwant Singh informed that the Sikh body has urged the President, Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and the National Commission for Minorities, to intervene into the matter and restore the status quo ante.
