GOALPARA: In a rare and daring feat by the doctors and medical staff of Goalpara Civil Hospital, a successful caesarean operation of a COVID-19 positive mother was conducted on Thursday at the hospital.
Post operation, the mother titled 'Ray', gave birth to a healthy baby boy who turned out to be COVID-19 negative.
According to hospital Superintendent Shyamalendu Das, the mother of the newborn was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition on Wednesday. The hospital administration immediately went for the swab test of the mother which resulted positive. As such, the hospital authority sought the advice of the State Health department. The matter was also brought to the notice of the Health Minister.
"The honourable Health Minister instructed us to conduct the operation in our hospital with special precautions and by following COVID-19 guidelines," Dr. Das said.
Subsequently, under the supervision of senior obstetrician Dr. Monikuntola Choudhury and by wearing PPE kits, the case was successfully operated. Anaesthesia specialist Dr. Hafizur Rahman and an experienced supporting staff also assisted in the operation.
Later, talking to the media persons, Dr. Choudhury shared her ecstasy, "I am extremely happy to be part of this unusual case. However, it is also true that prior to the operation I was nervous and earnestly prayed to God."
Meanwhile, Varnali Deka, Goalpara Deputy Commissioner, while congratulating the mother, said, "The district administration is taking utmost care during the corona pandemic so that all the departments, including Health and Education, continue their service unabated. Health orientation is also provided regularly to the medical staff."
