GUWAHATI: More than 70 persons have succumbed to COVID-19 infection in Guwahati in 15 days from April 16 to 30, 2021.
During the same period, 11,912 persons have been tested COVID-19 positive in Guwahati. Sources in the Health department said the figures of the total number of infection and deaths due to COVID-19 infection during the last 15 days are very high comparing to the last year's figures.
"Around 10,000 persons were infected with the virus in Guwahati within six months in 2020. But the infection figure has crossed 10,000 in just 15 days this year. The development is evident as to how fast COVID-19 infects people in the second wave in the city. The death toll was also much lower in the first wave of COVID in 2020," a source in the Health department said.
Sources said between April 16 and 30, 2021 altogether 71 persons succumbed to COVID-19 infection in the city. The city recorded one death each on April 17 & 17, 2 on April 18, 4 on April 19, 2 on April 20, 1 on April 21, 3 on April 22, 5 on April 23, 3 on April 24, 8 each on April 25 & 26, 5 on April 27, 6 on April 28, 15 on April 29 and 8 on April 30.
Cases of COVID-19 infection in the city had started rising soon after the Rongali Bihu celebrations started. While 245 persons were infected on April 16, the figure increased to 742 within a gap of four days on April 20. The figure crossed 1000 on April 26. Altogether 1313 persons were infected with COVID-19 on April 27.
"Going by the rise of COVID-19 curve the city will see more cases of infection and deaths in the coming days. Since Guwahati is the gateway to the North East the government will have to extremely careful in monitoring the COVID situation and accordingly take preventive measures," the source said.
