GUWAHATI: The death toll in the second wave of the Covid-19 in the state is almost four times that of the first wave. A comparison of the death tolls of both waves speaks volumes of the deadliness of the second wave.

According to state Health Department sources, the first wave of the Covid-19 occurred from March 31, 2020, to March 31, 2021. During this period, 1,105 people died of the Covid-19 in the state. The total number of Covid-19 positive cases in the state during the first was 2,18,412. The death rate was 0.51 per cent.

According to the sources, the second wave of Covid-19 is lashing the state since April 1, 2021. Till August 14 from April 1, 2021, as many as 4,377 people died of the pandemic in the state. The total number of Covid-19 positive cases in the state during this period is 3,61,076. And the death rate is 1.21 per cent.

As many as 5,482 people died of the Covid-19 in the state till August 14, 2021, in both the waves, the sources said.

The age groups that suffered the worst in both the waves are 46-60 years and 61-75 years.

According to Health Department sources, while 1,770 people of the age group 46-60 died of the Covid-19 till August 13, 2021, in both the waves, 1780 people of the age group 61-75 years died during the period. Till August 13, 2021, 723 people of the age group 76+, 33 infants of the age group 0-5 years, 33 children of the age group 6-18 years died of the Covid-19 in both the waves till August 13, 2021. What is significant is that 30 of the 33 infants and 26 of the 32 children died in the second wave alone.

The second wave of the pandemic is not yet over, and the apprehension of the third wave looms large. And this prompted the Health Department to set the target of vaccinating all eligible (above 18 years of age) people of Kamrup (M) by August 31, 2021. The BLOs (Booth-Level Officers) are inspecting door-to-door to find people in the metropolitan district who have not yet taken Covid-19 vaccines.

According to official sources, the Health Department inoculated 1,28,02,667 first and 27,37,560 second doses of vaccines till 7 pm on Sunday. Medicos conducted the vaccination drive from 343 sites on Sunday.
