GUWAHATI: The State Health and Family Welfare department has its eyes set on vaccinating around 50 lakh people as a measure to prevent coronavirus from spreading further in the State.

Talking to the media on Sunday, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "COVID vaccination drive is underway in the State. The drive being carried out by the Health and Family Welfare department will be stressed after the Assembly elections. Fifty-sixty COVID-19 positive cases are detected in the State daily, at present. If COVID tests are scrupulously followed at airports and railway stations, I hope, there won't be anything to worry about the pandemic.

"Let's observe the Rongali Bihu now. If any difference comes to light in the number of COVID positive cases after the Rongali Bihu, the department will have to adopt stricter COVID tests in railway stations and airports in the State.

"As of now, the drive has crossed the 10-lakh mark in the vaccination drive. The target is to vaccinate around 50 lakh people."
