Crimes against women and children: 200 help desks back investigation officers

GUWAHATI: The state CID has formed a cell with 200 help desks under it to help and guide investigation officers of various police stations in cases relating to crimes against women and children.

The help desks under the cell give tips to the investigators on how to collect evidence and investigate cases. The help desks also ask the investigators about the problems they face during investigations and how to overcome them, besides monitoring the progress of investigations. The thrust in this setup (help desks) is not to let criminals committing crimes against women and children go unpunished.

A few days back, State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta admitted at a public meeting that people committing crimes against women and children sometimes go unpunished as the police cannot provide evidence against them in courts. That prompted the state police to form the CID cell with 200 help desks under it.

The DGP also admitted that sometimes women slap false charges against people. Their witnesses often turn hostile during investigations. Such incidents also raise the number of cases relating to crimes against women and children in police stations, the DGP said. The State Police also developed a geolocation system. Under this system, a woman in distress needs to press twice the toll-free number 112 on her smartphone. It helps the police locate the place where the woman in distress is.

According to sources, crimes against women and children are rising gradually in the state. Domestic violence is also on the rise in the state.

According to a survey report, various factors are responsible for the rising crimes against women. Poverty, rising extramarital affairs, drugs and alcohol consumption, one-sided love, broken relationships etc., lead to such crimes. The survey recommends counselling for lovelorn youths and making counsellors available.
