SILCHAR: Following the abduction and killing of a person by Mizo miscreants, Assam's Chief Secretary (CS) and Director General of Police (DGP) visited Lailapur along the Assam-Mizoram inter-State boundary to take stock of the law-and-order situation here on Tuesday.

At the instruction of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta rushed to Lailapur on the Assam side of the boundary at around 4.05 pm to assess the situation.

Minister for Environment and Forest ParimalSuklabaidya, who was also present at the spot, handed over a cheque for Rs 5 lakh as ex gratia from the State government to the father of deceased IntazulLaskar, (who was abducted by Mizo miscreants and killed) at the latter's house in the presence of the Chief Secretary, the DGP, Cachar Deputy Commissioner KeerthiJalli and Silchar MP DrRajdeep Roy.

Speaking to the local people, Minister Suklabaidya said that the State government will Institute an inquiry into the killing incident. He further said the State government is also mulling to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Suklabaidya had rushed to the spot on Monday evening following the incident after getting instruction from the Chief Minister and reviewed the law-and-order situation with Deputy Commissioner Jalli, Southern Range DIG Dilip Kumar Dey, SP BhanwarLalMeena and other officials.

The Minister said he was happy to see the people of his constituency remaining calm and exercising the maximum restraint despite the series of incidents taking place on the inter-State boundary. Suklabaidya also conveyed to them the Chief Minister's concern and assured them that the government is with them. "At the Chief Minister's instruction, the Chief Secretary, DGP and other senior officials have visited Lailapur to take stock of the situation," he added.

The Minister asked the people living close to the inter-State boundary not to cross over to the other side in view of the prevailing situation; and assured them that three Border Outposts would come up permanently for their safety and protection.

Talking to mediapersons, Chief Secretary Barua and DGP Mahanta said that Assam would not budge an inch of its territory. "Assam won't give up its Constitutional boundary with the neighbour. The land belongs to us. There is no second opinion about our Constitutional boundary," said Barua, adding that Assam wants the boundary row to be resolved peacefully and amicably.

The Chief Secretary also said that the State government is in constant touch with the Central Government at the highest level on the boundary row; and exuded optimism that the problem would be resolved amicably, stated a press release.
