GUWAHATI: The numbers of deaths due to encounters with police and also custodial deaths are the maximum in Assam in comparison to the other seven States of the north-eastern region of India. This has been revealed by the Union Home Ministry (MHA) in its data for the period from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.
With respect to deaths due to police encounters during the mentioned period, four died in Assam and one in Arunachal Pradesh. However, the other six NE States did not have any such cases.
Pertaining to custodial deaths, altogether 34 cases were registered in Assam. Of these, two are in police custody and 32 in judicial custody.
During the mentioned period, seven cases were registered in Tripura (one in police custody and six in judicial custody) followed by Meghalaya and Nagaland with five cases each. With respect to Meghalaya, one case was registered in police custody and four in judicial custody while in Nagaland, all the five deaths were in judicial custody.
While Manipur had three such death cases (two in police custody and one in judicial custody), Arunachal had two (in judicial custody) and Mizoram registered one case (in police custody). Mentionably, Sikkim had no custodial deaths during the mentioned period.
