GUWAHATI: Forty days have elapsed after the theft of the idol of Ugratara Devalaya, Guwahati. With the police administration not being able to recover the idol as yet, the Bordeori Samaj and the temple managing committee have come out with a joint decision to hew an astodhatu (eight metals) idol of the Goddess and install it in the temple.

The Bordeori Samaj and the managing committee of the temple had an emergent meeting on Tuesday and took this decision. The meeting entrusted the executive committee of the temple to decide the shape of the idol going to be hewn. The committee is to hold discussions with scholars in the field and hew the idol. Three persons have been given the responsibility of making the blueprint of the idol.

The meeting has also formed a five-member budget sub-committee for hewing the idol. The committee has been asked to submit the budget by January 25, 2019.

Talking to the media on this, Doloi Parameswar Sarma said: “We’re thinking of leaving for Kolkata, Baranasi and South Indian cities for hewing the idol. Emphasis is being laid on making the idol looking like the stolen one, as much as possible.”
