GUWAHATI: Concerning a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) raising concern on the decreasing groundwater level and the water being used for commercial purposes in violation of law, etc., the Gauhati High Court has asked the State government to inform the Court about "what further progress has been done in this case". The Counsel for the State will have to apprise of this Court as to the latest development by way of an affidavit to be filed within two weeks.

This direction was given by the double Bench of the Court comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak on July 28, 2021.

This Court has been informed by the counsel representing the State that a high-level meeting has already taken place in this matter after the notice taken by Court. The meeting held on March 13, 2021, had also issued certain directions in this matter.

The High Court has slated August 17, 2021, as the next date of hearing on the case.
