Dispur moves to issue 'permanent land pattas' to indigenous landless people

GUWAHATI: In a significant policy decision, the Government of Assam has decided to issue 'Permanent Land Pattas' to the eligible landless indigenous people of the State. Following the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the R&DM (Revenue & Disaster Management) Department is presently preparing a 'Cabinet Memorandum' in this regard.

R&DM Department sources explained, "According to the present rule if an indigenous landless person applies for the ownership of a particular government land then the Department issues the 'Land Allotment Certificate' only after detailed examination of the submitted documents. Moreover, the applicant becomes eligible to reapply to the Department for the 'Land Patta'. But before this move, the applicant should possess the 'Land Allotment Certificate' for a minimum period of three years. It is under the present 'Land Policy-2019'".

The latest move will quicken the earlier process. Now such an applicant will be able to get the 'Land Patta' directly. The development will provide much-needed relief to the indigenous landless people. In other words, the authorities concerned have decided to do away with the much cumbersome first process of the 'Land Allotment Certificate' process.

Moreover, the new move has allowed the people who are still in possession of the 'Land Allotment Certificates' (issued during the tenure of the previous BJP-alliance government in the State) to reapply for the 'Land Pattas'. Mentionably, many indigenous landless persons received the 'Land Allotment Certificates' during the time of the previous BJP-alliance government in the State.
